What is a PowerPoint Add-in?

We've received a few inquiries from customers seeking to better understand what add-ins are and how our tools work.  We thought it would be helpful to answer some common questions about "what" PPT Productivity's tools are:

What is a PowerPoint Add-in?

PPT Productivity is a PowerPoint Add-in. An add-in is a way to extend features available when using PowerPoint.  These are an approved way to augment functionality.  Microsoft encourages third parties to create add-ins for the Office suite and provides guidance about how to install add-ins on their website

(Please Note - when you download our free trial and/ or purchase a license, our installer will typically automate the steps listed in the link above.  We're sharing the link above to reflect that add-ins are an approved way to augment available features).

A PowerPoint add-in can also be called a PowerPoint plugin, a PowerPoint Extension, PowerPoint software add-in, a PowerPoint addon - the terms are all interchangeable.

Is an Add-in the same as a PowerPoint Macro?

Kind of.  Macros are programming commands. Macros are used in creation of an add-in (when we created the first version of PPT Productivity for use by our colleagues in consulting we called it Cool Macros ).

Why do I need a PowerPoint Add-in?

To save time! Many of our customers work in Management Consulting, Investment Banking, Corporate Strategy and other roles requiring them to create a lot of presentations in PowerPoint.  Working long hours in such roles is an unfortunate reality - any time saving opportunity is very valuable.   PPT Productivity saves users time by streamlining creation and editing of presentations.  PPT Productivity has 100+ features including Alignment shortcuts, the Library (enabling you to save and easily reuse shapes and slides), table formatting (makes pasting data from excel easy!) and customizable shortcut keys.   The key benefit our tools offer is helping you to spend less time creating polished presentations!

What is a Consulting PowerPoint Toolbar?

Because Consultants use PowerPoint so much, a number of management consulting firms have developed proprietary in house PowerPoint Toolbars (e.g. McKinsey Marvin BA Toolbar, Accenture QPT, Bain Toolkit, Kearney Custom Tabs, Oliver Wyman Macros).  We created some of the early toolbar features for Boston Consulting Group when working there.  Some consulting firms customize the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT), while others have more extensive ribbons and functions (e.g. ours!).   PPT Productivity was created with consultants in mind.  Our tools are now in use by Consultants, Strategy teams, Investment bankers and many other customers around the world.
